How Do I Register a Domain Name for My Business

Making sure that your domain name is available before you try to register it is the first step.  It isn’t compulsory to register a domain name when commencing your business, unless you want to build your own website with a unique domain.

A website domain is an important marketing tool & a worthwhile aspect of your enterprise which assists customers in locating & identifying with your business.  Your domain name is your website address or url on the internet which gives you an online presence or brand.

It is the most effective to follow these guidelines when choosing a website domain name:

  • A name appropriate to your business or brand
  • Is simple to remember, spell & say
  • Is brief & original
  • Consider your audience. If you’re going to be selling locally then a .com.au address is fine, but if you want to sell internationally then you should consider buying a .com address as well.

You are required to be a commercial entity with either an Australian Company Number (ACN) or Australian Business Number (ABN) if you wish to purchase a com.au or net.au web address.  You can buy your domain name now & use it in future if you are not website ready as yet.  Go to Auda for more information about & links to registrars & resellers, including fees & options.

Whatever provider you choose to host your website, check if there are additional options included in your plan,  for instance, cloud storage or email hosting.

Register a company with your preferred domain name using the registrar/reseller links on the website listed previously.
